Family Day Weekend in Burlington

February 15, 2024

It’s Family Day this weekend and what better way to spend it than right here in Burlington? Whether you want to explore the natural landscape, take in some history and art, or get active, there’s something for every member of the family to do. Here are some ideas you can check out.

The Great Outdoors

This is also the last weekend you can check out Winterlit at Mountsberg Conservation Area. Take a moonlit stroll down two different trails lit with beautiful light installations, cozy up by Fireside Lounges, play board games, and enjoy delicious treats. Also at Mountsberg, enjoy a Winter Wagon Ride on the trails.

With the fresh snow falling, why not try snowshoeing? Mountsberg, Crawford Lake, and Hilton Falls all have trails so you can take a walk in a winter wonderland.

Also, head downtown Burlington to Spencer Smith Park for free skating on the Burlington Rotary Centennial Pond. Glide around the 10,000-square-foot pond while taking in the beautiful views of Lake Ontario in the winter. No skates? No problem! Skate lending is available on-site. Once you’re skated-out, take a stroll through the downtown core and explore the various shops, restaurants, and businesses.

Arts and Culture

Spend Family Day Weekend with Museums of Burlington. Visit Joseph Brant Museum to explore the exhibits, including “Sound, Just Sound”, then make some music using recyclable materials. Also, check out Ireland House Museum, where you can learn about cooking, butter churning, and wool carding through demonstrations around the historic Victorian farm, and afterwards create a special card for a member of your family, pre-booking is required.

You can also visit the Art Gallery of Burlington on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Multiple ongoing exhibitions include Living Lab, How can I know you?, and Stockroom. Plus, they have a Family Open Studio on Sunday from 1-4 pm, pre-registration suggested. Best of all? It’s all free to see!

Connect with Nature at the Royal Botanical Gardens

The Royal Botanical Garden’s winter exhibit this year focuses on the most extraordinary plants and animals found on the planet. Nature’s Superheroes: Life at the Limits looks at species whose homes range from the mountaintops to the depths of the ocean, and how they have evolved and adapted to the world around them. This is a time-ticketed exhibit and is perfect for learners of all ages. Then, extend your visit with a drive down to the Rock Garden to check out the Escarpment Train Exhibit.

Get Active!

There are special Family Day Activities occurring across the city in different facilities all day long. With public skating, stick and puck, swimming, dance, yoga, crafts, and gym play, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
